Pärnu Airport airside area will be reopened to air traffic
The renovation works of the airside area at Pärnu Airport that commenced last summer have come to an end and the airport will be reopened to air traffic. Air traffic between Pärnu and Ruhnu will be restored at the beginning of October. The completion of the reconstruction of the passenger terminal and the runway are planned for the last days of this year.
According to Riivo Tuvike, Chairman of the Management Board at Tallinn Airport, investing in regional airports is highly important. “Regional airports are an important part in local life, acting as a catalyst for the business environment and creating prerequisites for the emergence of new industries and businesses. The responsibility to attract companies into the region lies with the local community, however we are here to help Pärnu. The reconstructed airside area to be opened today is a big step forward in making the Pärnu region more attractive and connecting it to the world, which may lead to new developments that we cannot even think about today,” said Tuvike and added that as a result of the renovation of the passenger terminal, to be finalised at the end of 2021, the airport will have a capacity to serve simultaneously 80 arriving and 80 departing passengers.
“The airport will in particular serve local tourism, but will open up an opportunity for international flights in the region, likewise to Tartu,” Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure, Taavi Aas said. “The Pärnu City Government and businesses are important partners in using the Pärnu airport and bringing in passengers. I believe that in good cooperation, the people in Pärnu can create previously undiscovered opportunities to promote local life and tourism,” Aas added.
“Pärnu airport as an object is most definitely a landmark for our company, as there are not too many opportunities in Estonia to create aviation infrastructure,” said Sven Pertens, the Chairman of the Management Board at TREV-2 Grupp. “The reconstruction of a two-kilometre-long runway was both a challenging and an inspiring project for our team, as we were able to contribute to the renewal of one of the Estonian gateways.”
On 02 June 2020, AS Tallinna Lennujaam signed a construction contract for the reconstruction of the airside area of Pärnu airport with joint tenderers AS TREV-2 Grupp and Wesico Project OÜ; total cost being EUR 13.9 million. During the works, the runway was reconstructed, which now extends to 1970m x 30m, taxiways were expanded, the apron areas of the aircraft were reconstructed, an automated weather monitoring system installed, the lighting of the airfield renewed and a new maintenance and rescue equipment hangar built.
